Excellent point, Martin.

Now that I am oriented a bit, I can see how the information I need is in the Documentation, FAQ, and the archives. The site is excellent and well documented.

I did catch on to Q6.3 a bit after posting and that put me on the right track. At first, I didn't know it was a 'make' problem. I couldn't see the clues at first as to what the real issue was, it was a bit overwhelming. In that state, it's difficult to orient to what is meaningful to the issue at hand.

OSX invites users like me into the open source world -- which is great! But...I have never installed and compiled an app in this way and have hardly used command line for anything. I know enough to know that Debian and Mandrake are Linux distros, and I have a concept of what dependancies are. But that's about it.

So, I'm accustom to installing executables. My real goal here has been to install and use GnuCash. And this probably gets to the heart of the matter for people in my situation. I have my goal in mind, and I have my prior experience with what installation is like...pop the cd in and click a button (not that I expect or want open source to be that way, but this is the world I've been in).

In a way, its like I'm in the mode of "I want GnuCash, I need Fink to install it, what is the miniumn work I can do to get Fink to give me GnuCash". Embarrassing but true...You probably get many people in this mode asking questions. Some sort of 'wake up' call might help. For example on the download page with Quick Start, include an item that tells folks if they are really new to this world, reading the documentation is necessary.

Long answer....

Tara,

just one addition to Amit's very good explanations: You said you read through the FAQ, but actually the FAQ contains several entries related to your problems:

Q5.7: The package database at the website lists package xxx, but apt-get and dselect know nothing about it. Who's lying?

Q5.8: There's this package in unstable that I want to install, but the fink command just says 'no package found'. How can I install it?

Q6.3: I'm getting an error message involving make

For the benefit of others in the same situation, it would be useful if you could try to remember and explain why you did not find/see/understand these entries. Maybe their formulations could be improved so that you would have found and understood them?
