Which leads me to a suggestion of how others can be spared this grief. Make the documentation and the FAQ much more explicit than they currently are:
1. since this seems to be pretty common, you should add these explanations to the Fink documentation and not bury them in the Faq
2. the FAQ explanation does mention that the Apple installer is screwy, but in a very parenthetical way. Unless you are intimately familiar with the problem, you will (like I did) easily miss the key words "you need to do is reinstall the X11User package" You need to stress in clear language (as in these emails) that the Apple installer is seriously messed up. I would go so far as to suggest to people to do the check as *standard procedure* to ensure that the installation went ok. If they don't check up front, they may run into the problems I did. The little bit of time invested in the check up front, will spare hours of grief (and wasted time on this list as well). You should also note that you may have to reinstall the X11 packages several times, and perhaps not just the X11 user but also the X11 SDK (if I understand correctly from the posted comments).
Of course the best solution would be to have Fink itself check, but I understand this may not be trivial to implement.
In any case, thanks again, and I will try over the weekend and see if I can get through it properly this time.
