Dear David, I've encountered the same problem. I had to remove pcre (fink package of Perl Compatible Regular Expressions Library) to install EMBOSS successfully. Installing pcre after installing EMBOSS gave the same error, so it appears that the latest version of EMBOSS is not compatible with pcre. I think we should ask the maintainer about this. None of the fink packages I have installed on my computer depends on pcre, and I don't know why it got installed in the first place. So far, I have no problems without it.
