Binary:
the installer installs all of the essential packages. You can then install any other packages you like--either from binary or source--the latter requiring installation of the Developer [XCcode] tools.
Pros: You don't _have_ to have the Developer Tools installed if you just want to work from the binary distribution.
Cons: You can only install Fink in /sw


Bootstrap:
You build all of the base packages from source, and afterward you can install from source or binary.
Pros: You can install Fink in any directory on your system.
Cons: You must have a set of Developer Tools.
