I think the antialiasing stuff in OS X is no worse than the one in XFree, just the default settings are chosen badly and with the Apple attitude "We know what is good for you so you do not need to tweak anything, right?" it is hard to find where that can be changed if it is possible at all. Not that know where one could set it up in X but I think I read something about that once.
