So...do I remove libtool then try to install? Can I then replace libtool? Do I need libtool installed for anything else (wasn't something I chose to install directly so something else must depend on it). At least I seem to have a viable .deb, even if I haven't managed to install it...

Try "fink removing" libtool14-shlibs. If something needs it, you'll get a conflict message. I used the brute force technique from

I updated and compiled imagemagick-6.0.7-6 today, and it compiled and installed fine, so Jeff's temporary fix worked fine.
