Been there done that. Setting LC_CTYPE simply has no effect at
all. For instance, at a friends machine, with "de_DE.ISO8859-1"

$ echo '�'|grep '\w'

yields "�"; on my machine it's empty.

Seems my whole locale stuff is broken somehow. Oh dear.
