Thankyou somuch for the reply.
I disabled the firewall and tried but the same problem persists!
Now even when the firewall is enabled my Debian can Update packages using apt-get.
Are the files fetched using FTP or HTTP. If they are fetched using FTP is the FTP server in "Active" mode? Can the fetching be done using HTTP?
They're normally fetched by HTTP.
