Hi

I have a working X11 via the apple packages. I want to install the
system-xfree86 pseudopackage but I'm having trouble making the system
notice that I have it installed.

I am using fink commander: is this the problem?
Clicking on the system-xfree86 package, and then on the "install binary"
or "install from source" buttons seems to have no effect; when I go
back to install the package I want (pgplot), it insists on downloading
and building the entire xfree86 distribution from source.
(pgplot is in the unstable tree and only available as source)

I did a little poking under the hood.
  dpkg -l
doesn't show the system-xfree86 package.
However
  apt-cache show system-xfree86
gives the status line -
  Status: install ok installed

Que?
Can someone tell me the correct procedure for making fink commander
notice that system-xfree86 is installed.

Confused, Vince

PS: version numbers. fink-0.7.1, finkcommander-0.5.3, OS/X 10.3, Xcode1.1.

For current versions of fink, system-xfree86, system-xfree86-shlibs and system-xfree86-dev are virtual packages. They are _not_ installable, and dpkg doesn't know about them, but are supposed to show up automatically when you have an X11 distribution installed by means other than Fink. Presumably an "update table" might be what you need.

Check out

especially the part that says that installing the X11SDK is *mandatory* to install packages from source.
