For what it's worth, I get the same error. As a bit of possibly
relevant additional information on my end, I've got a similar
compiler configuration, and I'm using xorg-6.8.1 as my X11 flavor
(so the error looks like it's not X11-specific), and I had
freetype2-shlibs installed.
As I write this I'm trying another build with freetype2-shlibs
removed.
Following up: removing freetype2-shlibs allows the build to proceed.
I removed all freetype and freetype2 packages and it still doesn't
compile with the same errors.
Maybe it is an X11-Issue?

Or possibly a freetype (external vs. Apple's vs. Xorg's) issue.
