Noticed this is listed as an open bug: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.tracker/2165

Any progress being made?

There is a workaround which will repair your fink installation: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.general/15234 .

So it's safe to install this binary dist over an existing dist? They say not
to do that normally, right?

Yes, this was specifically designed as a solution to the bug in the existing binary package.

The best solution -- removing the bad binary so that this doesn't happen to people -- is also being done, but unfortunately we have a time lag of between 1 and 2 weeks for changes made to our apt repository to become available to users.
