I can't compile inkscape 0.40-1. I've been religiously moving /usr/local/ out of the way during compiles for several months, since I discovered that .debs I made on my main Mac weren't working on my PowerBook, as it had less stuff in /usr/local. Obviously some package that inkscape depends on needs to be rebuilt, but I don't know how to divine which package it is. Can anyone provide an educated guess, or instruct me in how to determine which other package to rebuild:

grep -rl '^dependency_libs.*libfreetype.la' /sw/lib/*.la

And then dpkg -S the output to figure out which package(s) to rebuild.

I think this will work, you may want to look at
grep -rl '^dependency_libs.*/usr/local/lib' /sw/lib/*.la too to ease future problems.

Thanks Peter. That highlighted gtkspell2-dev as the culprit. I rebuilt it, and then inkscape built fine.

I'll save that grep trick in my bag of fink tricks.
