My tetex installed through fink had an empty tipa folder. To get pyx to install and compile I had to download the tipa fontset and place the bits in the appropriate places. After that it worked. You need more than just tipa.sty by the way, as I found out.

The file 'tipa.sty' does not exist, although there is an html document '/sw/share/texmf/doc/help/Catalogue/entries/tipa.html'. It is unclear whether this should be installed as part of texmf. Does anyone have any ideas?
