Thanks Martin and Dave for your suggestions. Martin's fix works like a
charm (using "LucidaGrande 12" in my case). I also tried launching
gnome-settings-daemon as in Dave's suggestion, but I don't seem to have
this installed. Maybe it's not part of bundle-gnome, which I did
install via fink.
