I had this sound problem when starting KDE on my iBook for a while:
[...] couldn't auto detect which audio I/O method to use.
I have seen the same trouble reported on this list, so here is what worked for me:
In KDE, go to Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System
In the "Hardware" tab, replace "Autodetect" with "Enlightened Sound Daemon", and Apply...
Go back to "General" tab and press "Test Sound" to see if it worked.
(Tested with Mac OS X 10.3.7, Apple's X11 1.0 (XFree86 4.3.0), fink 0.7.1 (esound 0.2.35-8, kdebase3-ssl 3.3.2-21)
