I installed the Nicotine.app, which wraps all the fink stuff into a package, and that crashed in the exact same way. Then looking through my logs from a long time ago, I remembered that I had this same problem with nicotine when I first installed it. I solved it THEN by changing the libfreetype.6.dylib and libfreetype.dylib soft links to point to the libraries in /sw/lib instead of Apple's /usr/X11R6/lib versions (which are 6.3 as oppossed to Fink's 6.3.2).

Not too long ago, Gnucash started crashing also in freetype. So I changed the softlinks BACK to Apple's version of these libraries. Low and behold, Gnucash started working and Nicotine didn't have any problems. So, just now I switched the libraries to point back to the Fink version, and the Nicotine bus error went away. And Gnucash works. And so does the Nicotine.app.

Something is seriously foobar here though. It is true that there was an update to Gnucash Jan 1, but I ran Nicotine after that. What mysterious system change required me to flip those freetype softlinks? Having the X11 soft links point to the fink directories seems like a very bad idea to me. What is the underlying cause of this mess and how can it be straightened out?

TIA
