Thank you, and apologies for asking a FAQ. (I checked the archives, but in my drowsy stupor I didn't think to check the FAQs)
But I don't exactly know what you mean when you say "saved from a big build". Is there a danger that I'll do an unnecesary build if I don't set this up correctly?
Or is there a "long" build and "short" build depending on my set up?
I wan't to avoid unnecessary work/time, of course.

Basically, if fink doesn't find a working x11-dev package (via the X11SDK) it will download and build xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs, but not be able to install them--and this takes a considerable amount of time.
I'd classify this as an "unnecessary" build.
