I tried Century Schoolbook, size 17, and still have no bold text.
(I have no bold fonts with Michele's settings of course).

I think I will try installing freetype2, as it seems the most relevants
package making a difference between Michele's and mine (although
I know nothing about fonts actually).
As for xft2-dev, I have a set of pango-xft2 packages, are they equivalent
and/or compatible with xft2-dev?

I have run xfontpath dump, and got:
/sw/lib/X11/fonts/ghostscript/Type1/
/sw/lib/X11/fonts/konsole/
/sw/lib/X11/fonts/applettf/

Can anyone tell me if I must rebuild my mozilla or firefox after
I have installed a new package, to expect to see any difference?
