I haven't used Fink in a bit and am trying to get things working again so I can update some packages I use.
The important part in the messages that got dumped on you are the 3 lines []
Package gcc3.1 is an autogenerated virtual package. You cannot manipulate this type of package using the usual Fink tools. Read the detailed description of this package to learn how to use it.
You need the gcc3.1.pkg from the Xcode developer tools CD. There is also a FAQ entry on this, but the wording doesn't correspond to the current behavior of fink (which probably should be different).
