I started the thread on the beginners list to which Alexander refers, and my error is slightly different. Gimp complains that 2.1.4 of FreeType is installed, which is corroborated by Fink.
I can run Apple's X11 by uncommenting this line in my .xinitrc. exec quartz-wm I can alternative run XDarwin or Apple's X11 by commenting that one and uncommenting this one: exec wmaker The Gimp error is the same whether I'm using XDarwin or Apple's X11.
