Yes this seems to be the problem

[Kettlebridge:~] donpaul% env | grep PROXY
HTTP_PROXY=proxy.ill.fr:8888
FTP_PROXY=proxy.ill.fr:8888

but starting X11 didn't change anything, the proxy remains set. This makes it a fink problem I suppose since apparently "fink configure" is doing something strange, I reset the proxies to none in that. I can't see anything in /sw/etc/fink.conf to change to remove the proxy, is that where I should be looking.
