I have posted the said config.log file to my web site so as not to "gum up"
the digest here:

Some possibly interesting error messages: Line 86: gcc3: argument to `-V' is missing Line 92: configure: failed program was: Line 93: #line 2042 "configure" Line 94: #include "confdefs.h" Line 109: configure:2098: error: C compiler cannot create executables Line 160: configure: exit 77

And the salient error was:
configure:2068: gcc3 -no-cpp-precomp -I/sw/include -L/sw/lib conftest.c >&5
ld: can't locate file for: -lcrtbegin.o
configure:2071: $? = 1
Checking my own system found such a file as part of the gcc3.1 package, so you'd need to reinstall that.
