I moved my /sw directory out of the way, and reran the fink installer.

Ok, let me ask this explicitly: how there be a package to be removed if I've renamed the /sw directory? There should be nothing installed, right?

   xfree86 xfree86-shlibs

Are you really sure you want to have this? If you don't want to compile your own version of xfree86-4.4.0 or of x.org's X11, it is preferable to install Apple's X11 packages (and to forbid Fink categorically to install any X11 related package).

Does Apple's X11 tolerate fvwm2 and does it work in full screen mode? Ages ago it didn't. (I think)

dpkg (subprocess): failed to exec dpkg-split to see if it's part of a multiparter: No such file or directory

There is a FAQ entry on this problem.

Q6.19, which refers to 5.15 (why does the former page set its width according to the browser window, but the latter to something ridiculously wide, so that I need to scroll horizontally to see all the text? Could someone pass this inconsistency on the web site maintainer?) which tells me to rerun pathsetup.sh, which tells me that everything is already fine.

I think in all known cases zhere this came up it turned out to be a PATH problem. Are you doing this from the command line or from FinkCommander? In the first case, you should rerun the pathsetup application or the /sw/bin/pathsetup.sh script.

Right.
In the case of FC, you need to check its preferences and make sure that PATH contains /sw/bin:/sw/sbin. You cannot do anything with Fink if this problem is not solved.

Ok, that was missing. Added it. Works. Maybe this should be added to taht FAQ entry?

Here's the next error:

Any suggestions about that one?
