I added Martin's hack symlink for ft2build.h to my Xorg (which already has the top of freetype.h commented out to prevent that error). xpdf-3.00-14 now builds everything without error. BUT, it still doesn't have its default fonts (as reported in other threads), so I don't recommend using it yet, or, at least be prepared to downgrade to an earlier version if you do try it (you might be lucky and only view pdfs that don't need default fonts...)

Found an answer to the fonts issue: the system's xpdfrc file has _all_ of the fonts commented out and you have to set them up manually--this is apparently by design. (maintainer cc'ed)

Is this the recommended solution to the missing fonts?? Go and hack /sw/etc/xpdfrc to uncomment those lines by hand?? So every time I reinstall for whatever reason (like testing changing xaw3d versions...) I overwrite my changes and have to redo this??? (The latest xpdf 3.00-15 still has those lines commented out.)

What is the reason for commenting these lines out (in case in future I install the package that doesn't like having these lines in xpdfrc)?

Also, via a judicious use of almost all of the compiler flags, I was able to get it to build vs. xorg without hacking any files.

The new Xorg (6.8.2-21) and new xpdf (3.00-15) play nicely together without any hacks :-) Many thanks to all who had a hand in arranging this!
