I recently updated from a previous version on xfig to avoid the
problem with the use of the File menu causing xfig to crash.
I first updated xfig to 3.2.5-3, leaving xaw3d as it was (unfortunately
I don't remember which version it was), and this solved the File menu
problem, but now I have another problem:
when I select an action on the left pane which has numerous options at
the bottom of the window (such as 'update'), I no longer have a scroll
bar at the bottom of the window allowing me to see options that do not
fit in the width of the window.

I then updated to xaw3d 1.5-12 and ran 'fink rebuild xfig', and this
did not change anything. Is this the correct way to build xfig against
the last version of xaw3d?
Are others experiencing the same problem? (I think there should be
a scroll bar at the top of the window too, but I'm not sure I remember
correctly. Anyway I don't have one either).

I have the same versions of xfig and xaw3d as you, and I rebuilt in a similar way (install latest xaw3d, then rebuild xfig). The difference is that I do have that bottom scroll bar when I run xfig and select (say) "update". The top of the window does not have a similar scroll bar (top and righthand side have the canvas scroll bars, which are larger and graduated in inches or centimeters). There is also a similar thin scroll bar at the righthand side that would be needed if you have a huge number of depths (can happen when converting postscript to xfig). I have not noticed any problems with this latest xfig and xaw3d myself. The scroll bars in question are quite thin and hard to recognise. They look like part of the frame until you click on them or move your mouse over them.

I guess this doesn't help you much, except to know that it should be possible to fix it. Do you have anything unusual in your ~/.xfig or ~/.xfigrc files?
