since the emacs bin is no X11 I had long time ago set an alias to point to /sw/bin/xemacs, hence the installer confusion.
/usr/bin/emacs is still there though, untouched.

If you don't have /usr/bin/emacs, your system is not installed correctly. I cannot say which system package installs /usr/bin/emacs, but on all complete MacOSX systems I have seen, it is there.

There have been a couple of reports recently where people had the same problem as you, and they didn't have /usr/bin/emacs, didn't know why either, but got it back when they reinstalled some of the system packages (dev tools or BSD packages).
