So I did an ls on /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/database/ and
found a file mysql-4.0.22-11.patch which I copied to mysql.patch and
everything seems to be going fine now. What should I do with this info
to ensure that the mysql maintainer knows about this?

Email them directly in case they don't read the lists (that's a good
practice in general, even if they do read the lists).
