That was the case for me for some time, as well, but at one point it
simply became impossible to upgrade emacs through fink. I started with
Jaguar, and then upgraded to Panther and never changed my fink
directory, so maybe something strange carried over, but suffice it to
say that once the error showed up, it could not be resolved.

I don't understand this error message. Has anyone seen this? Did I do
