In my case I had to do "fink remove emacs20".
Of course, the "fink remove emacs20" itself failed (IIRC because the
pre-uninstall script crashed in a similar way), so I had to do some ugly
fiddling (IIRC I removed the pre-uninstall script from the debian package
database, and then did a apt-get remove emacs20).
Excellent! That worked just fine. I actually had emacs21 installed and using "fink remove emacs21" concluded without error.
