For the most part, I agree. Most of what I do (always with plain TeX, not LaTeX), works quite well with pdftex. However, I sometimes do things with graphics in them, specifically using the pstricks package. These do not work with pdftex; I have to go tex->dvips->ps2pdf or (if I remember correctly) tex->dvipdf. The same was true with Lilypond, at least as of 10 months ago, when I last used it. --Jonathan
