Adding the debian patch(http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2005/03/ msg00111.html) to .../10.4-transitional/dpkg.patch fixes the gcc problem. I'll post it as a patch, in case anyone gives a hoot.

Unfortunately, the problem from Fink 0.23.9, posted by Kevin (http:// sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=11923049) remains:

He posted that back in May, and hasn't gotten a response yet.  Sigh...
