gives nothing but that's the version of dods I have.
You should look for errors in the dods build log. If you kept the
build directory, you'll find a build log "World.log" there.

Yes, Sébastien looked at my build output and found g77 related errors.
He asked about the g77 version - here it is (on a Tiger G5, fink fully
updated):
% fink list g77
i g77 3.4.3-11 GNU Fortran compiler
(this is the same as on my Panther machine).
I'm currently rebuilding g77 to see if there any errors in that
package...
