I've just installed applex11tools and Xfree with fink. From the description, I understood it could use X11.app or XDarwin.app with the latest Xfree behind. I can actually use both, with aqua-wm, when I double click the X11 or the XDarwin icons. Nevertheless when I use a command such as:

$ startx

$ X -query ???

and so on, XDarwin starts by default. I would prefer apple X11 "frontend" to start in every situation because I believe it is a (very little) bit faster and because it deals better with the buttons of my wacom graphic tablet. How can I do this? where do I set the default "frontend" to start when I start an X server?
I'm not sure if there's a way to do it for startx.

You can, however, use

open-x11 <application>

which _will_ open <application> with X11.app as your display server.

thank you for this but I don't really have problem with this. in fact for X11 applications I found a trick that I share here:
- start X11.app when I log in
- have the line "export DISPLAY=:0.0" added to my .profile and/or .bashrc file (set DISPLAY :0.0 should work for csh users) - then I just type the name of the application at the prompt of a terminal window, for example:
$ xterm
and it redirects it to the X server.
but if I type:
$ X -query some.machine.com
XDarwin.app starts...
