Make sure you are trying to install fink on your hard drive, not
on the installer disk itself or some other disk image.

Manually try the test that the installer is doing. Assuming you do not
have a /sw directory, what happens if you do these 3 commandsin a
Terminal window:
  cd /tmp
  sudo ln -s /sw.tmp /sw
  sudo rm /sw
Enter your password if the 'sudo' asks for it.

In Finder, select "Computer" from the "Go" menu, select your disk, do
a "Get Info". What Format is listed?
