Fink is acting like I can't have both, but apparently my set of installed programs do require both.


no, the programs you're trying to *build* require both, but not at the same time.

You've got both db43-ssl-shlibs and db3-shlibs installed at the same time, and that's all that's needed to run the programs. However, some programs build against db43-ssl (which is the dev headers and stuff for db43-ssl-shlibs) and some build against db3. It only needs to switch out to a specific package like that when compiling, once the .deb files are created you can have all the runtime stuff installed simultaneously without incident.
