Jeff, that's great. I realise now that I should have paid more
attention to the lines like

there was one for -ljpeg, not there after installing the lib, so I
found and installed the cms, tiff and png libs, recompiled again and
- success!

Fink has better dependency information than DarwinPorts, but it's not
perfect. You might want to check and make sure that libjpeg is
installed ("fink list libjpeg", and if there's an i on the left it
means it's installed). If it's not installed, install it and then try

As far as I know the release is stable.

libjpeg during compile. Are you using Fink stable or unstable?
