I'm running out of hair to pull in my efforts to get KDevelop to build.

Sorry to be laboring this point, but is no one else having difficulty installing KDE applications on Tiger (OS X v10.4.2)?

Sure--but not everybody is, so the error you had wasn't ubiquitous--I built KDE on Tiger, for example, but using XCode2.0 .

Nothing jumped out at me when I looked at your error output, so one question would be whether you installed XCode2.1 cleanly or in place over your 1.5 (or whatever it was).

Many thanks for getting back to me, Alexander.

I really appreciate hearing there is nothing intrinsic to the OS X
v10.4.2 infrastructure that would keep KDE apps & libs from building.

Isn't going to XCode to create the build yourself, however, somewhat
contrary to the mission behind Fink? I thought we were suppose to rely
on the work done by the many folks maintaining the fink package build
files to get these apps to build.
By "using XCode2.0" I meant "using the gcc stuff that came as part of the XCode2.0 package"--the versions are different between XCode2.0 and XCode2.1. Sometimes Apple changes things for a new developer tools release that cause previously-working packages to break.

Having said that, I can see how you might want to use Fink for all those
packages that install easily (and there are many libraries and CLI
executables that do), then go to XCode to troubleshoot the building of
more complex apps that simply have too many 'unstable' dependencies to
build directly in Fink, linking to Fink-built libraries whenever
possible.

I realize there has been quite a bit of difficulty getting KDE & Qt to
build reliably under both Fink & DarwinPorts (I believe the DarwinPorts
KDE package is essentially in limbo right now). That is why - I suppose
- both KDE & Qt are in the 'unstable' Fink branch.

Having said that, there seem to many, many discussions on the Fink lists
indicating many KDE-based apps are being built and run via Fink.

What is a freeloader with a limited amount of working hours to do? If I
had to do the Darwin builds for KDE apps myself, I'd probably just hold
off and stick to using these KDE apps only on Linux (or via VNC to a
Linux box).

BTW, I did a clean install of Tiger, actually, since my Panther system
had started getting somewhat unstable, and I was long overdue for some
major hard drive house cleaning (my PBook 70 GB hard drive is back up to
60% free - up from about 15%). This means I installed XCode v2.0 fresh,
then updated to v2.1 when that major upgrade came out around the Apple
WWDC a month or so ago.

Thanks again for the info.

Cheers, Bill

Since you did a clean install, that rules out quite a few possible problems, e.g. you aren't using obsolete headers from an earlier OS version, nor are you presumably being plagued by the occasional problem of a package not building correctly on an upgrade because it's linking to an earlier version of itself.

Having said this, your particular error seems mysterious. You may want to contact the KDE maintainer directly, because he may have more insight about the circumstances behind your problem.

Or, if you can wait a bit, he's trying to get a binary release of KDE 3.4.1 out.
