Hello,

I recently left for a week for a workshop, and on returning, I tried to
start up MySQL as usual, but as soon as I start it, a pid stops it:

liberator:/ arouner$ su root
Password:
liberator:/ root# /sw/bin/mysqld_safe &
[1] 409
liberator:/ root# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /sw/var/mysql
STOPPING server from pid file /sw/var/mysql/liberator.richmond.edu.pid
050808 11:55:25 mysqld ended

[1]+ Done /sw/bin/mysqld_safe
liberator:/ root#

I have no idea what is happening. The possibilities are: 1) that the
networking group at our university did something in my absence; 2) I did
recently (before I left) run a verification of permissions form the Apple
Disk utility (on the install disk). But everything was fine before I left.

One odd behavior is that under System Prefs, when I try to select "Personal
File Sharing," the check in the checkbox appears and immediately disappears
again, again, making me think something may have been changed with the
network in terms of security settings. Otherwise Apache seems to be running
normally.

Any ideas at all as to what might be the problem are most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

P.S.--am running Mac OS 10.3.5, MySQL v. 4.1. I updated fink and all apps
roughly a month ago, but everything has been running fine since then.
