Hi,

Supposedly it wourld work with "startx --IOKit", but
I neer got that to do anything but lock my computer. X.org seems to autmatically go to --IOKit, but when I tried it just now it locked my
(other) computer up.

I've just tried this and I think you are right --- it
just freezes... (Interestingly, if you type "logout"
and hit Enter at this frozen stage, it brings you back
to an unfrozen login window...)

There's probably not a compelling reason to run it
in >console mode anyway: you lose Quartz acceleration, and hardware acceleration is still not functional, I believe.

Well, I think my ibook (3-yo 700MHzG3) is slower
running Tiger (though I'm not quite sure yet, only
installed it last weekend!) and, since a lot of the
stuff I do is work with remote unix machines anyway, I
thought that just having X running, rather than X and
Aqua, would be an improvement. There is, of course,
the anarchist in me who would like to do it anyway!

Was there a trick on Panther (I've tried to google for
this, unsuccessfully) to get it working? Something
about the keyboard files having moved?

Thanks!
Pedro

Try "removed"

On Jaguar the keyboard setup waa read from a keymapping file (when you run startx you see the "can't find keyboard file..." message). For Panther and Tiger it was decided that XDarwin should read the keymapping from the system instead. The files aren't anywhere on the system as far as I know, now.

Maybe people tried using a Jaguar keymapping file for the later OS verions.
