Apple's X11 is known not to necessarily get along well with other
window managers.  If you're using the system's startup stuff, then no,
you're not using it.

purge eliminates generated configuration files that aren't in your
home directory in addition to the files that were directly installed
as part of the .deb archive.

If the issue isn't a corrupt file but is rather due to a bad linkage,
unhappiness with a particular X11 lib, etc., "fink reinstall" will
bring back the problem.
