If it's only this you want to get around, you can force the installation by using

sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/x11/openoffice.org-en-gb_1.9m121-60_darwin-powerpc.deb

Thank you, that worked, and OOo runs fine so far as I've tested in five minutes. This is a good solution for now: I can't keep up with the rate of changes to OOo, so if I have a version that works for the things I'll use it for, I'll stick with it for a while. Though I do now (as of this afternoon) have a Dual G5 to play with, so maybe I'll see how much faster it compiles...once it has finished a few other basics.
