"fink install khexedit" will install the package you want.
No, it won't. You have to configure fink properly first.
You don't need to try to devine which .info file has it. How could
it get any simpler?
No, it won't. You have to configure fink properly first.
I was just following the FAQ, Q5.8, which said to move the .info file
for the package you wanted to the stable tree.
Later, after I added the unstable tree to fink.conf, I never ran
"fink list khexedit", because I had run that command earlier and of
course it didn't work; I expected it to continue not to work because
I still expected an info file.
Please don't assume that because you know how to do something that it
is both clear and simple. I made an honest effort to figure this out
on my own, and I couldn't. It certainly wasn't simple to me, or I
would have done it!
Since you pointed out how "simple" it should have been, here are the
gory details about what happened in my case:
1. I asked someone for a recommendation for a good free hex editor
for the Mac. They said to try khexedit, which is available in the
fink unstable tree for 10.4.
2. "fink list khexedit" - returns nothing
3. I checked the FAQ about unstable packages, which gave me two
options: update the conf file, or move the .info file. I chose the
second.
4. I couldn't find the .info file for khexedit.
5. Ran "fink selfupdate" (CVS), hoping khexedit.info would appear
(of course it didn't)
6. Checked fink web page for khexedit, and found a package
description. I saw that the parent was something, but I had no idea
that "parent" meant that khexedit didn't have a .info file.
7. Used Fink commander to update the conf file for unstable
packages. Searched for khexedit and didn't find it. I guess I
needed to restart FC after making the change? (It is there now) It
sure would have been nice if FC told me I needed to restart FC for it
to show the unstable packages.
8. Frustrated, I asked on the list for your kind help.
Of course, now that I know how simple the process *could* have been,
I am that much for frustrated. I followed what, to me, was a logical
course at the time.
As an end user without intimate knowledge of how fink really works,
it was not a nice experience. Now that I have a little more
knowledge (e.g. not all packages have .info files), I expect I won't
have trouble finding packages.
