I recently installed applex11tools on top of xfree86-4.5.0 and found that esound would no longer initialise. The problem is not with Apple's X11 itself but rather that it (at least under certain circumstances) messes with audio system preferences. A first solution for anyone with the same problem is to use Audio MIDI Setup in Applications/Utilities and set the frequency back to 44.1 KHz. My frequency was set to 32 KHz, another user (who by the way was using xfree86-4.3, so the problem is not new) reported 48 KHz. Resetting the frequency immediately solved the problem for me.
