I recall having this problem--I used the preferences to change which
button switches modes, and then switched it back.
I also had this problem in the past (on 10.3.9) -- the
problem is that if your xorg prefs have it go straight into
rooted mode on start up, you can't get at the prefs to
change it. You may be able to edit the prefs directly in
~/Library/Preferences/org.xfree86.XDarwin.plist using the
"defaults" command or a plist editor (I do not know much
more about this), or wipe out that prefs file so you return
to the default settings. What worked for me once stuck in
rooted mode was to invoke the logout key combo
(shift-apple-Q). After the seconds to logout count down,
XDarwin "cancels logout" but that somehow switches you back
to Aqua with XDarwin in focus so you can get at the
preferences the usual way.
My guess is that there is a change of format in the prefs
file that kicks in at some point in the upgrading to newer
XDarwin versions...once past it the problem has not recurred
for me.
