I've put fink-0.24.10-11 into the 0.7.2-updates section of the bindist,
which should hopefully improve the upgrade situation.

I promised to check out the update and report on the success. It seems to work!

So I rewound my old 10.3ish /sw from backup and tried a binary upgrade somewhat along the lines of what's outlined on the upgrade page on the website. The procedure I used was:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
fink scanpackages (not listed on the website, but helped...)
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

at this point, it downloaded and installed 100Megs worth... But afterwards, the system had gone bonkers---only about 170 packages available. I figured that a

fink selfupdate

might help, which it actually did. Back to 1790 packages available. But, during the selfupdate, fink somehow decided it would want to install libncurses5 from source, which took a while. An additional apt-get upgrade would want to install another libncurses5-shlibs... Anyway, it looked as if the system worked afterwards. But after all this I don't really trust the peace. I guess by now I fully subscribe to what Martin said (learning the hard way...)

Maybe; in any case, in the time it took you to write these messages, you could have run the 0.8.0 installer 3 times :-)

Ditched my /sw, downloaded the 0.8.0 installer & installed, added a few more binary packages, and am happy since with a clean install.

Cheers,

Moritz
