I finally had a look at it, and discovered that xmlunit would build
successfully (I haven't tested it yet) if I removed saxon.  I also tried
building with saxon-b installed, but had a similar problem, so neither package
can be installed to update xmlunit.  Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm the maintainer for SAXON. SAXON-B has a different maintainer, but it
seems likely that fixing the problem for one will fix it for the other. I'd
never even heard of xmlunit until today :)

Hmm, it builds fine for me under 10.3, can't test 10.4 until tomorrow at
least (you didn't say which you're using, but I'm guessing 10.4). I get a
few errors during the unit test phase, but no outright failures.

I'll try it tomorrow on my 10.4 machine at work and see what happens.
