Actually the difference between the terminals is that Terminal.app is set up by default that new terminals invoke a login shell, whereas xterm doesn't do this by default. I do all of my environment settings (Fink and otherwise) that I need X11.app to know about in ~/.bashrc (mainly because I don't like mucking around with the system-level files). My ~/.bash_profile has ". ~/.bashrc" in it (e.g. rather than a symlink) so that interactive shells also get the same. Depending on what you're doing, you might get sufficient traction out of changing the X11 Terminal menu item from "xterm" to "xterm -ls". -- Alexander K.
