You should not switch. When the 10.4 tree is ready, there will be a
public announcement. The main difference is that 10.4-transitional uses
g++-3.3 and 10.4 uses g++-4.0, so that 10.4 is therefore also usable on
Intel where gcc-3.3 does not exist.
