I'm typing merely "fink selfupdate", but fink.conf sez "SelfUpdateMethod: rsync". I think that means I have rsync enabled, doesn't it? The transcript certainly claims to be using rsync a lot ...
You should also try running /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl on the "good" system--that's nominally how fink sets the trees to go with your OS version.
Using (on either system) > sudo /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl > fink selfupdate-rsync > fink --version > fink update-all nets me: Using the old 10.4-transitional tree... Package manager version: 0.24.12 Distribution version: 0.8.0.rsyncand a whole lotta "update-all" work to be done, which I suppose sounds like the right answer.
