In 10.4-transitional, we used gcc-4.0 combined with g++-3.3. This is consistent with what Claus was seeing.

In 10.4, we finally have both gcc-4.0 and g++-4.0 as the defaults.
I've got the same: CXX='g++-3.3' on 10.4 stable when building libgnomedb a few days ago.

I'm not sure if it is related but Martin pointed out (as I reported it some days ago for aspell, thread some multiple symbols when compiling aspell), that using --disable-dependency-tracking get rid of this, and indeed it did.
